Fighting for Veterans

Congressman Salazar is committed to ensuring our nation meets the promises made to veterans, service members, and their families. John believes it is morally wrong to deny promised benefits to families who have lost their loved ones during the war. John’s understanding of veterans’ issues is grounded in both personal and professional experience.

In December 2006, Congressman Salazar’s Stolen Valor Act was written into law, making it a federal crime for people to wear false military combat medals, or to falsely represent themselves as recipients of such awards.  This important legislation has established Congressman Salazar as a leader on Veteran’s issues.

Congressman Salazar advocates for guaranteed funding for the Veterans Administration’s health care system—our servicemen and women should not have to fight budget battles once they return home to gain access to the benefits they were promised. John is fighting to fully fund VA health care, restore funding for nursing homes, and make it easier for rural veterans to access the health care they were promised. Salazar was instrumental in the opening of a CBOC in Northwest Colorado to better serve veterans in this area.

Congressman Salazar also leads the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Veterans Task Force. Recognizing the contributions and unique needs of Hispanics in the Armed Forces, this task force was created to address veterans and military retiree issues.
