Salazar in the 3rd

The Pueblo Chieftain

JOHN SALAZAR is seeking a fourth term as U.S. representative from Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. He deserves to be re-elected.

The Democrat is being challenged by Republican State Rep. Scott Tipton. Mr. Tipton is a fine candidate who we believe eventually will go on to higher public service.

But Rep. Salazar is our choice, for a variety of reasons. Let’s review.

On protecting the Arkansas Valley’s precious water supply, he’s been steadfast against further water raids by Aurora or any other entity. As a farmer himself who knows how it is to be at the end of an irrigation ditch, he will continue to defend Arkansas Valley farmers who want to maintain their way of life, of being suppliers of vital foodstuff for the rest of us.

On the Army’s proposal to expand the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, Rep. Salazar has put his foot down with a firm, uncompromising “No!” Again, as one engaged in agriculture, he supports the ranchers of Southeastern Colorado who want to maintain their industry and don’t want the Army to encroach on their property.

Rep. Salazar did vote for ObamaCare but has said he’s vowed to amend it with tort reform. He has broken with his party on several key issues, opposing the “cap-and-tax” energy bill and the bank bailout. He has called for a year-long extension of the Bush tax rates for all income groups. And he’s been endorsed by the National Rifle Association and rated a centrist by the National Journal.

John Salazar is an exceptionally fine family man, one whom we greatly admire. He and his family have developed the Salazar Ranch properties in the San Luis Valley into one of the finest and most successful agriculture business in Colorado. We enthusiastically urge people in the 3rd Congressional District to return Rep. John Salazar to Congress.
